Tight race for Championships Trophy predicted between Great Britain and hosts Germany
The European Championships Munich 2022 organisers are predicting an exciting head-to-head race between Great Britain and host country Germany to top the final medals table and lift the winner’s trophy.
Results data gathered from the latest European and World Championships suggests there will be virtually nothing to choose between the two sporting powerhouse nations across the 11 days of competition.
The reward for the eventual winners will be to get their hands on the stunning European Championships trophy claimed by Russia at the inaugural edition of the continental multi-sport event in Glasgow and Berlin in 2018.
Having crunched results from recent competitions held in the nine sports due to appear in Munich, our forecast predicts Great Britain finishing with 24 golds out of a total of 58 medals, with Germany just behind with 23 wins from their slightly higher final tally of 60 medals.
The athletics competition alone is predicted to deliver 11 golds for the British team, making them by far the leading nation in track and field.
For the Germans, winning 23 golds would mark a big step forward from their final haul of 13 in Glasgow and Berlin 2018, which saw them finish fifth in the medals table overall. They will also be hoping the home crowds can help push them on to even greater levels of success.
Hot on their heels could well be Hungary, who will take a huge leap forward from 10th overall in 2018 to 3rd this time out, according to our predictions. They are likely to benefit strongly from the addition of Sprint Canoe to the line-up of sports at this edition of the Championships.
They will need to be at their best to fend off the perennially strong multi-sport teams of The Netherlands, Italy and France, predicted to fill positions four to six on the Medals Table.
Ukraine, despite the current situation in their country, are predicted to perform slightly better than they did in Glasgow and Berlin, adding four gold medals to the eight they won in 2018 and rising to seventh in the table.
