ELEVATING THE
CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE
OUR REASON FOR BEING
To become a European Champion means that you are the best out of 750 million people on the continent.
We are determined to increase the level of awareness and recognition this achievement deserves.
THE WHOLE IS GREATER
THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS
The European Championships brings together the existing championships of the continent’s leading sports into one multi-sport event to create a must-watch, must-attend experience that elevates the Champions of Europe.
Following the success of the inaugural European Championships in Glasgow/Berlin in August 2018, Europe’s best athletes once again competed for the highest accolade of their sport on the continent – the title of ‘European Champion’ – in Munich in August 2022.
The European Championships builds the prestige and profile of individual continental championships by uniting them in one multi-sport event every four years.
The event inspires the next generation of young athletes through the power of sport – leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
There was over 500 years of shared history and heritage between the 9 championships for the European Championships Munich 2022.
Uniting these sports’ European championships helps clean a crowded sporting calendar.
The event brings powerful benefits of aggregation such as enhanced media exposure and higher ticket sales than for standalone championships.
The use of existing sporting infrastructure and landmarks minimises environmental impact and costs of the Host City.
The event has an innovative and cost-efficient staging model - good value in comparison to other multi-sport events.
In 2022 the event once again had a central timetable, uniform brand, and an overall medal table and trophy.
OUR VISION
Create a must-watch, must-attend event
that elevates the Champions of Europe
OUR MISSION
By uniting existing European Championships,
we celebrate the highest honour in European sport
OUR CORE VALUES
Uniting
The European Championships united 9 European Championships “under one roof” in Munich. The concept relies on the Federations and the other stakeholders working together in a spirit of collaboration to find common solutions that unite us in our mutual goals to elevate the participating sports and their athletes. The European Championships can break down barriers to bring nations and individuals together in a spirit of respect and mutual understanding.
Diverse
Europe is a diverse collection of countries and cultures. A multi-sport event featuring nine Olympic sports including individual, team and ball sports brings together a diverse collection of athletes, disciplines, skills, expertise and human excellence.
Inspiring
All European Champions started their journey to success with a moment of inspiration. The European Championships touches the hearts and minds of millions as they witness the creation of and celebration of champions. The iconic Munich Olympic Park, Olympic Regatta Centre, downtown Munich and streets of the city were an inspirational backdrop to the action in August 2022.
Longevity
The existing individual European Championships that make up the multi-sport European Championships have a long and rich tradition and history that needs to be developed and nurtured. The European Championships were an appropriate celebration of the longevity of the Olympic Park on its 50th anniversary.
Sustainable
Ensuring that the multi-sport European Championships is economically and environmentally sustainable for host cities is a key element in the philosophy underpinning the concept. Financial viability was at the core of Munich’s application, with Munich’s sporting infrastructure a compelling part of its bid with the use of existing facilities and landmarks minimizing environmental impact.
