Germany predicted to hold on to top spot in final Championships table

Germany are predicted to hold on to their position at the top of the overall nations medals table across the nine participating sports as the European Championships Munich 2022 reaches its final weekend.

The host nation built up a clear lead over their main rivals Great Britain early in the event but their advantage has been slowly whittled away.

However, European Championships Management (ECM) are predicting they will accelerate their gold medal-winning exploits during the final two days and will finish with 28 out of an impressive total of 64.

ECM have been building results obtained so far at this Championships and crunched them with data from international competitions in the run-up to the event to deliver a series of predictions.

The results still have Great Britain in second place, buoyed by strong recent results in paracanoe sprint, gymnastics and mountain bike, ahead of Italy, Hungary and France.

Ukraine, despite only having secured two gold medals so far, are predicted to surge up to sixth place by the end of Sunday’s programme of events, ahead of Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Spain.

In a boost to the multi-sport nature of the Championships, it is predicted that 36 nations will claim at least one medal in Munich.

The national team finishing at the top of the medals table will be presented with the European Championships Trophy in a ceremony due to follow the athletics on the Central Stage at the Olympic Park on Sunday evening.
