European Championships trophy presented to Russia

The inaugural European Championships 2018 came to a stunning climax this evening as the Trophy for the winning nation was presented to Russia during the closing ceremony in George Square, Glasgow.

Rocco Cattaneo, President of UEC and 2018 European Championships Board Member – accompanied by The Right Honourable Lord Provost of the City of Glasgow, Councillor Eva Bolander – handed the trophy to members of the successful Russian team, drawing a curtain on an 11-day festival of sport in and around host cities Berlin and Glasgow.

Russia topped the final European Championships 2018 Medal Table, winning 31 golds overall, ahead of Great Britain who finished the event with 26 golds.

The European Championships Trophy is crafted from aluminium, finished with 22ct gold plate, with three handles, perfectly-designed by Touch of Ginger for the winning team to be able to lift and carry it together in celebration.

It stands 650mm high and more than 400mm wide across its arms, weighing in at an impressive 10.5kg. Each of the trophy’s three sides features an identical European Championships emblem and fretwork of triangular holes designed to reveal the golden interior beneath.

4,215 athletes competed in seven sports across the 11 days of competition, with 187 European champions crowned.
