FAMILY AFFAIR

Class of 22 athlete Oliver Zeidler (GER) will seek to put a golden end to the European Rowing Championships on Sunday, with his final in the men’s single sculls the last race off.

Zeidler won both his heat and his semifinal and looks like a strong favourite for gold – although he faces stiff opposition from Graeme Thomas (GBR), Olympic champion Stefanos Ntouskos (GRE) and the impressive Melvin Twellaar (NED).

If Zeidler can seal victory, he will emulate the achievements of his grandfather Hans-Johann Färber, who won Olympic gold in the men’s coxed four in 1972.

“Fifty years after the Olympics, it's a circle that has closed and it's very emotional for me of course as my grandfather won gold here, the biggest success of his career on the same course,” Zeidler said earlier in the regatta.

There will be 12 A-Finals contested at the Olympic Regatta Centre. Check out further highlights in our full preview.

CAT AND MOUSE GAMES

After a rollercoaster Saturday track cycling continues with three medal events on Sunday. The men’s and women’s sprint tournaments will treat the public to spectacular cat and mouse games, and the endurance aficionados can eat their heart out with the men’s elimination race and the women’s points race.

While the women’s individual sprint tournament only goes up to the quarterfinal phase on Sunday, the men already completed a first day of sprinting on Saturday, setting up a nice rivalry between France and Great Britain in the semifinals.

BUI'S FINAL GOODBYE

It could get very emotional for the home crowd in Olympiahalle, as gymnast Kim Bui (GER) will compete in her very last European final as she qualified in fourth place for the uneven bars final. Bui hopes to finish her remarkable career, that included three Olympic appearances for Germany, on a high after she clinched team bronze on Saturday.

The team final was dominated by the Italian team who aim to continue their gold rush in the apparatus finals, having won two golds so far. European all-around and team champion Asia D’Amato will compete in two finals: the vault and the balance beam, while her teammates all qualified for one or two finals as well. Jessica Gadirova (GBR) will be the only gymnast to defend an individual title at Munich 2022 after clinching gold on floor exercise a year ago.

POSTCARDS FROM BAVARIA

Cycling shows its many different faces in Munich. With BMX freestyle park already finished, track cycling well underway and the mountain bike events yet to come, it’s time for the most classic of all cycling disciplines on Sunday: the men’s road race.

The men will start in Murnau a. Staffelsee for a 209.4km race, which will lead them past Bavaria’s scenic lakes and mountains before finishing at Odeonsplatz in the centre of Munich.

TARGETING HOME GLORY

Alexander Megos will be aiming to win Germany’s first sport climbing medal of the European Championships Munich 2022 when the men’s lead final takes place on Sunday at Königsplatz in central Munich.

The 29-year-old topped qualification alongside the Czech Republic’s Adam Ondra and they will need to be at their best as they will be pursued by a familiar pack of rivals, led by Megos’ fellow German Yannick Flohé and Slovenia’s Luka Potočar.

The women will crown their champion in boulder where a confident Janja Garnbret (SLO) starts the semifinal in first place following a dominant performance in qualification on Friday.

HEAVYWEIGHTS CLASH

On the second day of table tennis action at the European Championships Munich 2022, fans at Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle will get a first taste of the singles tournaments where some big names enter into the group play stage, while the seeded mixed doubles pairs enter the tournament into the round of 32.

Defending champions Dang Qiu (GER) and Nina Mittelham (GER) face Europe No.1 Truls Möregårdh (SWE) and Linda Bergström (SWE). They have their eyes set on glory, as has Class of 22 athlete Sabine Winter (GER) who is competing alongside Benedikt Duda (GER).

”I saw the medals here are very nice and I want to go home with one of them,” the 29-year-old Munich local said.

HITCHCOCKIAN SUSPENSE

The 2022 Europe Triathlon Championships will come to an end on Sunday with the elite mixed relay, a format that combines the individual sport with pure team spirit and promises plenty of drama and suspense. Each team is comprised of four members, with each athlete setting off on a super-sprint triathlon before tagging off to a teammate.

The shorter race distances make for a varied, exciting and, above all, fan-friendly competition. The crowd in Olympiapark will be eager to learn whether France can add to their tally after sweeping the podium in the men’s race and claiming bronze in the women’s race.
