Beach Volleyball chief relishing multi-sport European Championships debut
Beach volleyball will appear at the European Championships Munich 2022 for the first time on Monday, thrilling the crowds at the Königsplatz just as Sport Climbing has done so far.
For the managing director of federation CEV, Thorsten Endres, the inclusion of his sport in the multi-sport event is something he warmly welcomes.
“Beach volleyball has proven in the past in other multi-sport events, including the Olympics, to be very successful and one of the most popular sports,” he said.
“We are very happy to line up with the other sports because we really believe in the strength of the team. Beach volleyball is a team sport, so we believe together we are stronger and that’s why we support this concept of multi-sport event.”
The Beach Volleyball competition will feature as many as 15 former or current European champions, three Olympic champions and as many as five World Championship gold medallists.
Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway are the standout names in the men’s competition as the Vikings vie for what would be an unprecedented fifth straight European title.
Endres added: “We are very proud and happy to be a part of this multi-sport event with beach volleyball for the first time. We are looking forward to delivering a high-level volleyball event but also to see the other sports. I believe team sports, especially in these difficult times, have a message of togetherness and solidarity.
“It’s very important to share this positive energy, this positive moment all together and that’s why with my colleagues we are looking forward to welcoming as many people as possible from Munich, from Bavaria, Germany and all over Europe to the beach volleyball.”
