Triathlon chief praises stunning park setting for Championships events
President of Europe Triathlon Renato Bertrandi has praised the organisation and venue setting of the European Championships Munich 2022.
Competition got under way in spectacular fashion on Day 2 of the Championships with Great Britain’s Non Stanford claiming gold ahead of ahead of German Laura Lindemann and France's Emma Lombardi.
Stanford, 33, who is due to retire at the end of the season, pulled away from the pack during the final 10km run as the crowds lined the streets of the Olympic park.
As one of the five founding sports of the multi-sport concept premiered in Glasgow and Berlin 2018, triathlon is appearing in the event for the second time.
A strong line-up of world class triathletes has been line up in three events – women’s, men’s and mixed team relay – in the heart of Munich’s Olympic Park with all of the action free for spectators to attend.
Betrandi said: “The organisation and hospitality of the event has been outstanding.
“Regarding the venue, it’s great - we could not expect anything better. Organising an international triathlon is not easy because we need to find water to swim, we need to find a proper track for cycling and then a proper running route with a transition in between.
“When we first came to Munich in 2019 to look at the venue, we saw the lake and were a bit sceptical. But we invite everyone now to come and see our venue. It is just stunning, just fantastic.
“In recent years triathlon has become a European sport. In the most recent Olympics, eight of the top 10 competitors were European in men’s, women’s and mixed team relay, so you can expect to watch all the best triathletes in the world at our races.”
