Men's 100m sprinters hope to channel spirit of Jesse Owens and Usain Bolt as athletics begins

Germany's two-time world shot put champion David Storl takes centre stage in the qualifying rounds in Berlin as the action gets underway tomorrow. Storl will be under the spotlight at the European Mile in Breitscheidplatz Square where the men’s qualifiers take place. The 3,000 capacity temporary arena will also host the 48 medal ceremonies and all six road races later in the week.
Meanwhile, at Berlin Olympic Stadium, the 100m men go through their paces on the blue track in round one of the sport's shortest event. Watch out for Zharnel Hughes (GBR), Jimmy Vicaut (FRA), Filippo Tortu (ITA) and Jak Ali Harvey (TUR) who have all broken 10 seconds this season. Inspiration comes courtesy of Jesse Owens (USA) and Usain Bolt (JAM) who both made sprinting (and sporting) history in this stadium.
Queens of the velodrome aiming for further gold

Multi-European, world and Olympic champions Miriam Welte (GER), Katie Archibald (GBR) and Kirsten Wild (NED) will all hope to add to their already impressive medal collections on the sixth day of track cycling at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. The British reigning European champion will go up against the current world champion from the Netherlands in the women’s omnium, while the German will try to retain her European crown in the women’s 500m time trial.
Mixed teams take the plunge as Ukraine pair face Russian rivals

Ukraine’s world bronze medallist Oleg Kolodiy and partner Sofiia Lyskun (UKR) are the in-form pair as the diving competition starts with the mixed team event at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh. Russians Evgenii Kuznetsov, Olympic silver medallist in the 3m synchronised springboard at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and Iuliia Timoshinina are also expected to be contenders.
Russian rivals return to the pool on final day of swimming

The swimming programme will reach its halfway point tomorrow at Tollcross International Swimming Centre. There are set to be some fascinating tussles including an all-Russian meeting in the 100m backstroke final featuring Olympic finalist Evgeny Rylov (RUS) and world junior record holder Kliment Kolesnikov (RUS), who only turned 18 in July. Another Russian, Anton Chupkov, will be favourite to add the European crown to his world title in the 200m breaststroke.

Seconds out, round two in Italy vs Spain fight

Italy and Spain will again battle it out for bronze behind Russia and Ukraine in the technical team event tomorrow. Spain lost out by just 0.1 points to Italy in the free team on Saturday. Before that, Svetlana Kolesnichenko (RUS) will again grace the pool in the technical solo final after looking invincible in today's preliminary round.
