Britain's Laugher springs into action at Royal Commonwealth Pool

Great Britain's top diver and Olympic Champion Jack Laugher contests the men's 1m springboard at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh on Tuesday, while the women compete in the 10m platform synchronised event. Laugher will start favourite but Patrick Hausding (GER), Giovanni Tocci (ITA) and Oleg Kolodiy (UKR) also have strong medal claims. The women's 10m synchronised looks quite open, with Ekaterina Beliaeva/Iuliia Timoshinina(RUS), Eden Cheng/Lois Toulson (GBR) and Valeriia Liulko/Sofiia Lyskun (UKR) the top contenders.

Swedish swimmer Sjostrom aiming for golden treble

Sarah Sjostrom (SWE) will start her bid to add to the two gold medals she has already claimed. In the 100m freestyle, the world record holder will face Pernille Blume (DEN), who she edged in the 50m freestyle, and Federica Pellegrini (ITA), the World Champion over 200m. Adam Peaty (GBR) goes in the 50m breaststroke heats while Olympic gold and silver medallists Katinka Hosszu (HUN) and Siobhan-Marie O'Connor (GBR) set out in the 200m individual medley. Kliment Kolesnikov (RUS) takes on the 200m backstroke.

Italy again try to overhaul Russia on final day of synchro

The only events in which anybody has threatened Russia’s dominance at this European Championships is in the mixed duets, where the relaxed and confident World Champions Georgio Minisini (ITA) and Manila Flamini (ITA) put pressure on European Champion Aleksandr Maltsev and his new partner Mayya Gurbanberdieva before just falling short. The mixed technical duet on Tuesday morning will provide another chance for Italy's long-term duet partners to add European gold to their world title. Meanwhile, Svetlana Kolesnichenko (RUS) will look to double her gold medal tally at Glasgow 2018. Having already won the solo and duet technical events, she competes in the free solo final and duet free final with Varvara Subbotina.
The longest and shortest distances bookend track and field's first medals day

The long-distance race walkers will take the honour of contesting the first medals to be awarded at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin on Tuesday morning. World Champion and former world record holder Ines Henriques (POR) is likely to set the pace in the women's 50km event, which is being contested for the first time at the Europeans. The men's event over the same distance will have a new winner for the first time since 2002. Frenchman Yohann Diniz, who won the title in 2006, 2010 and 2014 - it was not on the programme at Amsterdam 2016 - misses the action with a stress fracture, leaving the door open for Olympic and world champion Matej Toth (SVK).
Berlin goes off with a bang after qualifications on day one, with the 100m semi finals and finals for men and women on Tuesday evening. Focus in the men's event will fall on the four European athletes who have gone under 10 seconds this season - Zharnel Hughes (GBR), Jimmy Vicaut (FRA), Filippo Tortu (ITA) and Jak Ali Harvey (TUR). In the women's race, all eyes will be on the Netherlands' sprint queen Dafne Schippers as she goes for a third successive 100m title. Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith, the reigning 200m Champion, will hope to push Schippers all the way.

Ireland’s big Track Cycling hopes aim for madison medal

Lydia Boylan and Lydia Gurley (IRL) will hope to go one better than their surprise silver medal from the 2017 European Track Cycling Championships in the women’s madison at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Emirates Arena, but will encounter a powerful Great Britain duo that could include Katie Archibald (GBR) and a Dutch pair featuring 35-year-old Kirsten Wild. World Champion Nicky Degrendele (BEL) will take to the track behind the ‘derny’ as the keirin events conclude the Glasgow 2018 Track Cycling.
Vogel and Neff look to make it a Mountain Bike Swiss double

In the absence of fellow Swiss and Olympic Champion Nino Schurter, Florian Vogel is the strong favourite for the men's Mountain Bike title at Cathkin Braes. Compatriot Lars Forster could be his closest rival. Switzerland will also be looking for medals in the women's race earlier in the day. World Champion Jolanda Neff is the favourite as she looks to regain the European title she won in 2015 and also 2016.
