Switzerland's Nicola Spirig is targeting her sixth European title in the women’s triathlon event, which starts at Strathclyde Country Park on Thursday.

"It's definitely a goal to try to win a medal," 36-year-old Spirig said. " I love racing European Championships. It's hard to say why, but I have always done well at Europeans and I always like to go to Europeans."

Among the titles picked up in her 20-year career are gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games and silver at Rio 2016.

She will be up against  reigning European Champion Jessica Learmonth (GBR), the world number five who will try to lead the swim leg to retain the title.

Young French talent Cassandre Beaugrand, who dominated the Hamburg leg of the 2018 ITU World Triathlon Series, will look to prove her strength in the run section together with Germany’s Laura Lindemann, the 2017 sprint European gold medallist.

Vendula Frintova (CZE), fourth at last year's European Championships in Kitzbuhel, is another podium contender alongside Belgium's Claire Michel, who was fifth at the Yokohama WTS event in May.
