Nothing like a Dame: Legend Laura DAVIES (GBR) teeing up for more golfing history

Golf legend Laura DAVIES (GBR) still has a burning desire to blaze a trail across the sport and is seeking to add another chapter to her success story at the Glasgow 2018 European Championships.

DAVIES, a professional golfer since 1985, will be competing in the inaugural women’s and mixed team events at the Gleneagles PGA Centenary Course from 8-12 August and has another moment of history in her sights.

At 54, she is still breaking new ground and will arrive at the Championships with a fresh title to her name. In mid-July she became the first winner of the US Senior Women's Open title, at the Chicago Golf Club.

"It was my first title win for eight years [the previous one was the Indian Women's Open in November 2010] so it's nice to prove to yourself you can still win," DAVIES said.

"The Gleneagles event sounds very exciting and I am delighted to be involved in it because it is ground-breaking in that it involves a mixed team with men and women competing for equal prize money.

"That's a big breakthrough for the sport. I'm playing really well at the moment so hopefully I'll be able to add another 'first' to my list.

"It's also good to be competing alongside other sports at these Championships, but I'm not sure how much we'll be able to watch because we are playing out at Gleneagles.

"The team events are match play which I love. I won a match play event on the same Centenary Course [the WPGA International in 2001] so I have some good memories of playing there."

DAVIES will pair up with Georgia HALL (GBR) when the group stages of the women’s tournament start on 8 August.

Britain’s most decorated golfer, whose victory at the US Senior Open was her 85th career win, was made a Dame in the 2014 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

"Just call me Laura," she said. "The only time people call me Dame Laura is when they’re taking the mickey."
