Marios Georgiou eager to dance his way to more success at Glasgow 2018

The gymnast is hoping his moves guide him to success in Glasgow's The SSE Hydro.

After winning five gold medals in recent months, Marios Georgiou (CYP) is eager to continue his success at the Glasgow 2018 European Championships - by dancing.

"I really like to dance and, next to gymnastics, I am dancing a lot, even in the competition arena," he said. "It helps me to get less nervous. So yeah, you will see me dancing a lot."

But Georgiou, who won two titles at both the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (floor and parallel bars) and Tarragona 2018 Mediterranean Games (horizontal bar and individual all-around), acknowledges that his recent triumphs bring pressure as he prepares for the men's artistic gymnastics competition in Glasgow.

"I am more known in Cyprus now, a lot of people know me," the 20-year-old said. "I am expected to do well in Glasgow and I aim for at least one final, especially on parallel bars or horizontal bar."

The athlete also won gold on the parallel bars at the Osijek Challenge Cup in May but he has not been able to train as much as he would have liked in the lead-up to the European Championships so is not sure he will be able to maintain his winning streak in Scotland.

"I was in really good shape, especially during the Commonwealth Games," he said. "But right now I have some problems with my [left] hand. I am not that well prepared but hopefully I will still make it to a final.

"I didn't want to make the problem with my hand worse. I have done a lot of physiotherapy and I even had an MRI (scan), just to have it checked. Luckily enough I can still compete."

The men's qualifying competition begins on Thursday at The SSE Hydro.
