Host nation Germany favourites to claim Championships trophy

Germany’s better-than-expected start to the European Championships Munich 2022 has seen them become the current favourites to top the predicted final Medals Table.

With five days of competition completed, the Championships organisers have revised the predictions they released before the event started, which had Great Britain topping the final standings ahead of the host nation.

Building live results into the athlete performance data crunched before the sport got under way on Thursday has enabled European Championships Management (ECM) to update their predictions.

Home advantage may well be working in Germany’s favour, with them now predicted to finish with 27 gold medals out of a total of 65 compared with Great Britain’s 20 golds and final overall tally of 50.

The reward for the eventual winners will be to get their hands on the stunning European Championships trophy claimed by Russia at the inaugural edition of the continental multi-sport event in Glasgow and Berlin in 2018.

Below the top two, Italy lie in third ahead of Hungary and France. Ukraine, despite the current situation in their country, are still being predicted to perform better than they did in Glasgow and Berlin, rising to sixth in the table having already enjoyed success at the Championships in rowing and track cycling.

However, The Netherlands have slipped down the table slightly to seventh, despite golds in athletics, cycling and rowing.

Belgium are a new entry at 9th, having claimed two golds already in track cycling. Poland and Switzerland complete the predicted top 10 line-up.
