Belgian cyclist Victor Campenaerts favourite to retain men's time trial title in Glasgow

The cyclist, who won silver when elite men were added to the Championships in 2016 before going one better last year when he struck gold in Denmark, will take to the streets of Glasgow on August 8.

Belgium's Victor Campenaerts is the man to beat in the Cycling time trial at the Glasgow 2018 European Championships as he looks to add to his medal collection in the event.

The athlete won silver when elite men were added to the Championships in 2016 before going one better last year when he struck gold in Herning, Denmark.

A pro rider with the Lotto Soudal team, he also finished third in the time trial on the opening stage of the Giro d'Italia in Jerusalem in May, when potential Glasgow rivals Jose Goncalves of Portugal and Britain's Alex Dowsett were fourth and fifth respectively.

Other contenders include 2015 World Champion Vasil Kiryienka of Belarus, Switzerland's Stefan Kung and Ireland's Ryan Mullen, who took the bronze medal last year.

Ellen van Dijk (NED) will be looking to complete a hat-trick of gold medals in the women's race against the clock, having helped team-mate Marianne VOS win silver in the road race on Sunday.

The men's and women's races both start at the Riverside Museum, with the finish at Glasgow Green.
