A look ‘Back to The Roofs’
Over 11 magical days in August, The Roofs festival in the Olympiapark was undoubtably the ‘10th sport’ of the European Championships Munich 2022. The second edition of the multi-sport event was previewed with a stunning opening night when 55,000 people came to the park to enjoy performances from German stars such as Sportfreunde Stiller and Marteria ahead of the sports action starting. So, what else happened in the days that followed? Let’s wind back time and take stock.
The diverse programme had something to offer for young and old, music lovers, foodies, art connoisseurs, sport enthusiasts, and everything in between. And best of all, it was free of charge!
772 programme items were divided into 11 Roofs – each with its own themed world: Music and creativity met kids’ play, tradition and so much more.
150 different artists, among them LUNA, ELIF and GAYLE graced the Central Stage. While projects such as the Sports Badge and Champions Garden honed in on everyone’s understanding of sustainability and what each of us can do day-to-day. Of the 1.47 million visitors who came to experience Munich 2022 in person, 30,000 completed Sports Badge challenges with 4,000 people earning their actual Sports Badge, meaning they tried out all nine Olympic sports that formed the European Championships. Meanwhile, all 176 European Champions at Munich 2022 were given a potted plant to add to the Champions Garden and leave behind a lasting legacy instead of a soon-to-be-wilted-bouquet.
Medal ceremonies for athletics, the Fair Play Award for Nahuel Carabaña, and the awarding of the European Championships Trophy to Germany, who finished top of the overall medal table, were handed out to their respective new owners in front of the up-close fans and diverse festival crowd. Just a stone’s throw away children could play in their own world; tech fans were able to learn about upcoming technology, and art connoisseurs followed along as graffiti artists brought a new piece of art to life over the timespan of the event.
The Roofs festival contributed to a fun and friendly atmosphere in an Olympic Park always full of people with happy faces enjoying a welcome distraction from their daily worries in these challenging times.
The closeness of sport and culture side-by-side created something something tangible and liveable for visitors, who saw athletes still in their kit walking through the park holding a medal they had just won or dancing into the night at one of the festival tents — memories to last a lifetime for spectators, volunteers, and athletes.
