The first sustainability project of the multi-sport European Championships Munich 2022 is taking place in September 2021 – themed "22,000 LEGO® bricks for Munich 2022".

The local organising committee (LOC) is aiming to collect 22,000 LEGO® bricks by 30 September 2021 to build wheelchair ramps during a communal event primarily to draw attention to the topic of accessibility during the event.

The goal of building the ramps (which are not a substitute for proper ramps) is to ensure permanent accessibility through structural and other suitable measures: for greater mobility and more self-determination in everyday life, without being dependent on external help, with a barrier-free environment benefiting everyone.

The LOC are looking for classic LEGO® bricks; flat bricks and baseplates for building the ramps. DUPLO bricks can also be used for the ramps. People can hand in their bricks directly, send them to the Munich LOC or, if from Munich and willing to donate 1 kilogram of bricks or more, have the LOC pick them up.

The communal event where the ramps will be jointly built takes place on Sunday 10 October 2021. People will meet at Olympiapark in front of the east entrance of Olympiahalle, starting at 10 a.m. In cooperation with Behindertenbeirat München and WüSL e. V., the LOC will be building LEGO® ramps together all day long, with people invited to stop by and be part of this special project.

The project is the first of 12 monthly ones contributing to the ecological, social, and economic sustainability of Munich 2022 that calls for active participation under the title of ‘Count & Last’.

In addition to specific measures within the organisation of the multi-sport event, the initiative includes these 12 challenges that everyone – from young to old – can participate in and make a difference:

  • 12 projects that bring the European Championships Munich 2022 values to life.

  • 12 projects everyone can take part in.

  • 12 projects with a common goal in mind.

  • 12 projects implemented with exclusive partners.

  • 12 projects based on community, team spirit, and the idea of a meaningful future.

The goal is to leave an inspiring and legacy to all participants and future sport events and strengthen the image of major sport events, the City of Munich and Olympiapark.

From 1 September, every month a new project will be announced on the Munich 2022 website here: https://www.munich2022.com/en/count-and-last.
