An estimated 600 rowers will converge on Glasgow’s Strathclyde Country Park next year for the 2018 European Rowing Championships – part of the multi-sport European Championships – and among them could be at least one member of a remarkable German rowing family.
The Staelberg family, from Krefeld, has nine siblings and six of them are involved in rowing, several having competed at the highest level.
With encouragement of their parents – their mother Gabriele was a rower – Nicolas (33), Melanie (30), Carina (29), Miriam (28), Manuela (26), Carolin (25), Marisa (23), Melina (23), Michaela (22) started their sporting careers in swimming, then played water polo.
However, all of them – with the exception of Nicolas, Carina and Miriam – soon graduated to rowing.
Melanie, the oldest of the sisters, started to row first at the age of 14 and rapidly showed her talent. She won gold as part of Germany’s women’s four at the 2004 World Rowing Junior Championships,
Her sisters Manuela, Carolin, Melina and Marisa then quickly followed in her footsteps, with the latter also representing Germany and joining her sister as a junior world champion having been part of the eight that won at the 2011 World Rowing Junior Championships.
However, it is the youngest of the siblings, Michaela, who has now become the standard bearer for the family.
She took a silver medal in the quadruple sculls at the 2016 World Rowing Under-23 Championships and has set her sights on getting on the podium in Glasgow as a stepping stone to hopefully further success at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
