Serbian long jumper Ivana Španović has a fair claim to being the athlete of the year so far after her phenomenal performance at the European Athletics Indoor Championships earlier this month.
In front of her delighted family and friends on home territory in Belgrade, she flew out to the massive distance of 7.24m to defend her title she won two years ago, producing the best effort under cover the world has seen for 28 years.
Now a firm date in her diary is the inaugural multi-sport European Championships in August 2018, which will bring together the existing championships of seven of Europe’s leading sports into one coordinated, exciting multi-sport event.
Glasgow and Berlin are the co-host cities next year. Aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, golf, rowing and triathlon will be held in Scotland, with the German capital staging the athletics.
In Berlin, the now two-time European indoor champion will be looking to also defend the European outdoor title which she won in Amsterdam last summer and Španović has also become a confirmed cheerleader for the championships.
“I think the idea is really great, anything similar to the Olympic Games will be good for the sports and the audiences love it,” commented Španović after acquiring the latest addition to her gold medal collection.
“For me, after athletics, I think my favourite sport of all the others in the European Championships will be the gymnastics. When I was young I tried gymnastics but I was too tall and just too big!
“I’m definitely going to be there [in Berlin], trying to get the gold again. I take each championship one-by-one but it’s less than two years away, so that’s close. Yes, next year’s European Championships are definitely on my horizon.”
Before Berlin, Španović has the aim of getting to the top of the podium at the IAAF World Championships London 2017 this coming August.
At the last two world championships, Španović has taken the bronze medal but her indoor feats mean that she is now the long-range favourite to take the plaudits in London and arrive in Berlin as the reigning world champion in her specialist event.
The European Championships 2018 will take place from Thursday 2 August to Sunday 12 August 2018 with 10 days of compelling television coverage starting Friday 3 August. The European Athletics Championships in Berlin will be staged during the last six days from 7-12 August.
