It was colourful, cheerful and diverse at this year’s 39th Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Berlin: a perfect opportunity for next year’s biggest sporting event in Germany – the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships (7th – 12th August 2018) – to celebrate its own diversity of 47 disciplines and more than 1,600 athletes competing.

The organisers of Berlin 2018 co-operated for the first time with the CSD and installed a massive family sports area where kids of all ages could try out exciting, child-friendly athletics exercises.

Here, important tips and an extra boost of motivation was given to each child by Jennifer Oeser, heptathlon star and silver medallist of the Berlin 2009 World Championships, who spent some time with the kids in the Berlin 2018 family sports area explaining the versatility and fun of athletics.

In addition to that, extensive Berlin 2018 branding was showcased, including in front of the Brandenburg Gate. For this day in particular, the Berlin 2018 design was rebranded in rainbow colours.

However, not only athletics showed its diverse approach by co-operating with the CSD. Nationwide famous Drag Queen Gloria Viagra represented the high interest of the queer community for athletics, First, she did a 70-metre bungee-jump in honour of the upcoming European Athletics Championships, which was followed by a statement expressing her commitment for Berlin 2018.

“I am looking forward to the duel of Robert and Christoph Harting in the discus event at Berlin 2018.  Brother against brother, that will be highly exciting!”
