BRITISH GYMNASTICS GOLDEN BOY MAX WHITLOCK UNVEILED AS GLASGOW 2018 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS OFFICIAL AMBASSADOR

Olympic, World, Commonwealth and European champion gymnast, Max Whitlock MBE, has been named as an official ambassador for the Glasgow 2018 European Championships – an exciting new multi-sport event that brings together some of the continent’s leading sports.
Whitlock, who is currently back in training ahead of the 2017 World Gymnastics Championships in Montreal, was confirmed as a Glasgow 2018 sporting ambassador at a One Year to Go celebration event at the SEC. He was joined by Bonnie the seal, who was unveiled as the friendly new face of Glasgow 2018.
Glasgow 2018, which brings together the existing European Championships for Aquatics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rowing and Triathlon along with a new Golf team championships, will be a new highlight on the global sporting calendar and the biggest sporting event hosted in Scotland since the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Fans can buy tickets for 84 thrilling sessions of sport starting at just £10 for adults and £5 for under-16s and over 60s. Tickets for all events can be purchased from www.glasgw2018.com/tickets and will be sold on a first come first served basis, with fans encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.
Glasgow 2018 ambassador Max Whitlock MBE – who was a double gold medal winner at last summer’s Olympic Games in Rio - has tasted success in the city before having clinched three gold medals at the SSE Hydro during the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Max also won his first world title in front of a Glasgow crowds on the pommel horse during the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships.
And the Glasgow 2018 ambassador has already set his sights on adding to his incredible record in the city and urged fans to play their part in creating history during what will be an unforgettable 11 days of sport in the summer of next year.
Max said: “I’m really excited about Glasgow 2018 – it is always great to compete at a multi-sport event and I have always loved it here in Glasgow. The crowd is always amazing and give you that extra lift. It can make such a difference to your performance out there on the podium.
“I witnessed that first hand during the 2014 Commonwealth Games and again at the World Championships the following year. So I have no doubt that Glasgow 2018 will be a huge success. I’d just urge fans to get their tickets quickly to avoid disappointment.”
The Glasgow 2018 European Championships is delivered in partnership with several leading European sports federations with support from the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council and will build on the legacy of events including the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2015 World Gymnastics Championships. The event is also backed by a number of partner local authorities from across Scotland.
More than 3,000 of the best athletes on the continent will compete at Glasgow 2018. The action will take place in 12 venues across Scotland including Glasgow’s iconic SSE Hydro (Gymnastics), Edinburgh’s Royal Commonwealth Pool (Diving), Strathclyde Country Park (Rowing and Triathlon) in North Lanarkshire and the Gleneagles PGA Centenary Course (Golf) in Perth & Kinross.
A number of free events – including the Cycling Road Race through the streets of the city and beyond, Open Water Swimming at Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and Mountain Bike at Cathkin Braes – will also take place, giving as many people as possible the opportunity to witness sporting history on their doorsteps.
Glasgow 2018 will take Scotland’s sporting reputation to the next level and with a potential television audience of up to 1.03 billion across Europe set to watch the action, Glasgow and Scotland will again shine in the global spotlight with the event being covered by free-to-air broadcasters across the continent including the BBC.
